The Bureau of Land Management opened the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area to off-highway vehicles in 1982, transforming 10,000 acres of windblown sand into one of the few legally rideable dune systems within 20 minutes of a major American city. No permit is required. No gate closes.
The terrain stretches east from Clark R. Petersen Boulevard, its crests shaped by southwest winds that have deposited sand against the Sheep Range foothills for eleven thousand years.
Today the dunes draw more than 60,000 riders annually, most piloting rented all-terrain vehicles or utility task vehicles across bowls, ridgelines, and washboard flats that range from beginner-friendly hardpack to expert-only drop-offs. The sand here is coarser than coastal dune fields — a mix of quartz, feldspar, and dark basalt grains eroded from the surrounding basin — and it holds tire tracks for hours before the wind erases them. Outfitters stage from the main staging area on weekends, their rental fleets parked in rows: single-rider quads, tandem sport models, and six-seat side-by-sides with roll cages and harnesses.

The staging area operates around the clock, and riders launch at dawn to claim the smoothest sand before midday chop sets in. Evening sessions, less common, offer cooler air and low-angle light that lengthens every shadow across the ridgelines.
